The hiatus is over, and the Taco Knights are back in action!

For our first return to the tacos... Plank Road Tavern in Lakewood.  It's a great little bar (it used to be the Riviera, for those that are familiar with Lakewood haunts) with a nice little patio out back.  I had no idea about the patio... And I LOVE PATIOS.  Taco night was pretty quiet, which I am okay with.  I know the place gets pretty packed on the weekends.  They also have live Irish Music on Thursdays, which is a nice change of pace for Lakewood bars!

Anyhow... To the tacos...

They offered a choice of chicken, beef or veggie and hard or soft shell.  The veggie option was pickled veggies in an avocado sauce.  While I'm not a huge fan of pickled veggies, I did really enjoy it.  It was not like any veggie taco I've had before, and that says a lot!  The group really liked the beef taco.  It wasn't the "run of the mill" ground beef.  Rather, it was real shredded beef.  The chicken didn't win over anyone, though. It was pretty standard and a little dry.  The soft shells won the crowd over, but the hard shell was stale and tasted like the plain ol' store-bought option.

Overall, we were pleased.  A lil room for improvement, as proven by the average store, but it's a great bar and we had a great time!

I had heard about this place for some time... $1.00 and super cheap beer?!  Where do I sign up?!  However, I had no idea what to expect.  It's not the most ideal neighborhood, and the building itself is not all that inviting.  A little sketchy with the sidedoor entrance and random strange empty rooms (which we obviously explored).  I love this place, though.  The people watching is spectacular, the tacos were cheap and good, and the beers are huge.  Service was a little spotty, but I think it matched the atmosphere and it was pretty packed.  Plus, the bartenders were so damn personable!

They offer a huge variety of tacos.  You select a hard or soft shell and a meat (or non-meat!) to go with it.  They are also all loaded with sour cream, cheese, lettuce & salsa.  FOR A DOLLAR!  They also offer nachos, empanadas, quesadillas & burritos.  We stick with tacos, but I'd go back to try out the rest!  We were all VERY excited about the variety.  I think the hardest part was figuring out which one you were eating.  There was alot of "I think this is the Saxon Sausage... Or maybe it's the Italian Carnival." Their shells left a bit to be desired.  Nothing special to note, since they were your everyday shell, but for $1.00, it's completely acceptable.

Also, I cannot complain about $5.00 liters of beer.  Yes, liters.

Lincoln Park Pub is a great Tremont bar.  They have a fantastic beer selection and a great patio.   Perfect spot to celebrate Ken's birthday!  We actually had gone to LPP as our first (unofficial) taco night.  Before the ratings began.  It was definitely a great time to re-visit!  Sadly, the weather didn't allow for patio sitting.
First things first, our server was GREAT!  She was attentive (but not too attentive) and thorough.  I am always a sucker for good service.  Also, they had great music playing.  I don't think that's something that usually sticks out, but the great music prompted lots of nostalgia.  We're all music lovers!

Now, to the important part.  The Tacos.

They don't have a huge variety (although, I hear that may be growing with specialty tacos added to the mix), but the selection of sauces adds a lot to their offerings.  They have six different flavors to add to your tacos: Mild, Medium, Hot, Morning After, Kill Me, Mama Sauce.  I'm a wimp, and stuck with what I know, but it sounds like the Kill Me was quite good, but not overwhelmingly spicy.  Their shells were also some of my favorites to date!

I may be a little biased with this one... I was able to eat tacos... But I was really impressed with Touch.  Not only did we have a fancy room and a pretty kickass server (anyone remember her name???), but the tacos were pretty good, too!  Pretty good selection.  Their slogan of "F#@K Yo Dolla Tacos" sounds about right.   The tofu wasn't my favorite veggie taco to date, but I did really like the kimchie sauce.  From what I heard from the group, the pork and beef tacos were quite delish.

Map Room holds a special place in our hearts... And we've all spent many a' nights hanging out there.  We were happy to see they have a taco night!

They offer the option of chicken or beef and a hard or soft shell.  Each taco comes with lettuce cheese and taco sauce (in a packet...).  Sides, including salsa, sour cream, and fresh tomatoes, are an additional $0.35.

It was not a favorite of the group.  Apparently the meat did not have much flavor and left a bit to be desired.  Worth $1.25 and a fun night at one of our favorite bars, though.

Please note, no veggie tacos. AGAIN.  Do bar owners hate vegetarians?  Rant post to follow.

Made somewhat famous by Tom Hanks mention on Letterman, "Patty's Famous Tacos" were obviously on our list of stops.  It was definitely packed.  No way our larger group was going to be able to sit together (bummer.)

You order tacos right at the kitchen window and let Patty know what you want.  Beef tacos only, but you have a choice of hot, medium, or mild sauce.  Tacos are loaded with sour cream, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes and delivered right to your table.  Don't forget to pay back at the kitchen, or catch Patty when she's walking back through.

No veggie option, and they only serve tacos on taco night.  I went to Chipotle.

Reddstone is a great little bar in the growing Battery Park neighborhood of Cleveland.  They have an amazing patio in the summer with an outdoor bar.  I have been there a handful of times with kind of spotty service, but I didn't let that stop me from checking out one of the more popular taco nights!

With $1.00 beef tacos, with a very popular cilantro lime sauce, they were pretty popular with our group.  They were tough to eat, as the fried shells were pretty large, almost like mini taco salads (pictured below), but everyone seemed to really enjoy them.  Everyone kind of complained about the difficulty to maneuver at first, but then gorged on tacos and seemed to be over it.

Yet again, no veggie tacos.  Another veggie quesadilla for this gal.  I will never understand why bars & restaurants can't just put the quesadilla ingredients in a taco shell and call it a day.  You win some, you lose some.  The quesadilla was very good, though!

They are currently renovating their kitchen, but I made sure to confirm (thanks Facebook!) that taco nights are still on.  To be honest, I'm not sure if they had less of a variety due to the kitchen reno or not.  I'll have to consider some future research :)  Their full menu is great, though, and I will definitely be back!

This is not one of our normal spots... An unassuming bar in a strip mall in Brooklyn... The bar is filled with regulars (including one of my co-workers who has her seat at the bar and will fight you for it).    The place was pretty busy.  The bar was full and the tables filled up while we were there.  A mixed crowd, for sure.

It took us a while to get tacos since you have to order them from the bar or directly with the kitchen.  Servers/bartenders do not come to your table.  Our order definitely took over a half hour.  The taco knights were hungry and getting crabby.  And then the giant tacos arrived, over-flowing with cheese, lettuce, tomato, and more cheese (seriously, lots of cheese).  The shells were really good, and the tacos were big.

Not a ton of variety... And they only serve the taco specials on Wednesdays.  The rest of their menu isn't available.  I had a taco salad, since there were no veggie options.  We got some of the nachos, too, and they hit the spot.

The beer was cheap, and there was bar bowling (our favorite).  So, I think overall we were pretty pleased!

A new fan favorite, Lion on Lorain is a new spot in the West Park area of CLE.  I thought it was an all-around great taco night.  Our server was great, the tacos were amazing, and the bar itself (technically a biker bar?) was pretty nice.  I was sitting on a Harley Davidson stool.  I guess there's a first for everything.

The tacos were huge and delicious, AND they came with tortilla chips.  I LOVED the veggie taco special (pictured below... empanadas... yummmm!).  It sounds like the steak taco was a hit, too.

That night's taco specials:
Oaxacan Steak taco: Ancho mole seasoned strip steak grilled medium rare, cilantro guava slaw and spiced mango preserves.
Empanada Taco: Vegetarian bean and cheese empanada with spring greens, tomatoes and a salsa verdeWe all planned on going back because the rest of the menu sounded amazing.  Mac & cheese sandwich?  Yes, please.

(uh-oh... Riverwood has some competition!)

We had a pretty small crew for this one.  So, the ratings are what they are.  Mediocre, I guess.

I really like West End.  I had only been there for brunch (which is ah-mazing, by the way), but it's a great little bar.  A lot of regulars sitting at the bar, and pretty good servers, too.  I've always thought about stopping in for dinner, and now I probably will after seeing the dinner menu.  It all sounds pretty good.  It was definitely pretty quiet that night, which surprised me after reading that it fills up pretty quickly.  We were the only table there.  Everyone else was seated at the bar.

Now... to the tacos.  I was pretty bummed to find there was no vegetarian option.  Nada.  C'mon, you can't throw some veggies and cheese in a taco shell?!  I ended up ordering a veggie quesadilla... but that just ended up bothering more.  It was really good, but they totally could have tossed the ingredients together and made it a taco.  I guess they preferred getting $6.00 out of it, instead of $1.00.  Can't blame 'em, but I can still bitch about it.

LOVE this bar (particularly on a quiet weekday).  They were offering taco nights during the warm days (pretty sure it's on hiatus during the winter).  Since they do not generally serve food, we had to go to the back to order from the taco guy.  I hear he had a pretty great selection of hot sauces to choose from as well.

For being tacos not coming from a kitchen, they were pretty popular with the group.  I know the guys really liked the pork tacos, and I was a big fan of the bean.

Service is always a little spotty there as there seems to always just be one bartender working both sides of the bar.  They usually have a pretty good draft beer selection, which is always a big plus!

Before going in, we knew Riverwood was going to be a favorite.  So, I must admit there was a bit of bias.  However, the tacos are so.damn.good.  They don't advertise a veggie option, but they did make a very delicious vegetarian taco for me.  The tacos and beers are cheap and the taco shells are definitely everyone's favorite of all spots so far.

Very rarely do people write notes on their rating cards (yes, we have rating cards), but "best tacos ever" was written on two of them.  And my friends don't lie.

Being that we have a good friend that runs the joint, we were pretty excited about this one.  I mean, really,
1/2 price margaritas?!  Where do I sign up!?

There was a HUGE list of tacos to choose from.  I would probably say close to 20 (can't remember exactly).
However, we all kind of thought they almost had TOO many to choose from.  I think if they had a few less,
they could have executed the good ones a little bit better.  Everyone either loved their tacos or was not a fan
at all.  I was not a huge fan of the veggie taco, but their fruit taco was amazing.

You can't go wrong with the location and the atmosphere, though.  And our server was FANTASTIC!  (We
are all huge suckers for good service!

Johnny Mango was surprisingly not a fan favorite.  Granted, we had a HUGE group, and I don't think they were completely prepared for what was coming their way.  I was told (via Twitter by a Johnny Mango person) they took reservations.  When I called I was told they did not. Not a big deal.  We got there early enough to take care of the big crowd.  It was PACKED.  I think, unfortunately, they kind of lost us when we had to to attempt to split a check between 12-14 people.

Down to the tacos... I LOVED the bean.  A couple of others who got the veggie version were also fans.  The beef was not as big of a hit as I expected, but the $1.00 price tag is pretty exceptional!

I'm a big fan of Johnny Mango, especially as a vegetarian who loves margaritas!  I will definitely be back!

We all had pretty high expectations for Luchita's, which I think may have been its downfall.  They were super accommodating when our group kept growing in size and the service is always great there.  However, the tacos left a bit to be desired.  At 99 cents, I guess you can't complain too much, though! Their food is usually so exceptional that we will definitely all come back.  Just maybe not for bland tacos.
